Monday Night Practice at St. Josephat Tentatively CANCELLED PDF Print E-mail

Unfortunately we have some bad news about Monday night practices ...

We just received word from St. Josephat's that they have denied our request for a gym permit as they feel we damaged the floor last year by leaving tire scuff marks. Unfortunately this was the first we heard about their concerns.

As a result Monday night practices have been TENTATIVELY CANCELLED until further notice.

We may be able to get the gym back if we can assure the school that we use non-marking tires, pedals and shoes. Darren Bedford is in the process of sourcing non-marking tires.

Effective immediately for ALL indoor gym practices, ALL riders must use unicycles with plastic pedals or pedal caps and wear non-marking indoor only shoes (no street shoes permitted).

Read on for some suggestions on shoes ...

If you are in the market for new indoor non-marking shoes here are some to consider that are popular amongst freestyle unicyclists around the World. Shoe fit and comfort are specific to the individual, so be sure to try them on before buying. The Toronto Unicyclists do not make any money from the recommendation of these shoes, however, if there is enough club interest in Adidas shoes it may be possible to negotiate a club discount from a local soccer shop.

Adidas makes indoor soccer shoes with soles that are both non-marking and suitable for doing freestyle unicycle tricks like walk-the-wheel, gliding and stand-up tricks.

Adidas Samba Classic Black (SKU: 034563) OR White (SKU: 772109)

Adidas Samba Classic Black

Adidas Samba Classic White

These shoes are meant to be an indoor soccer shoe but they are a great all-around shoe for unicycling. While they are sold as mens shoes many female unicyclists wear them too.

They are usually available from your local soccer apparel store or online directly from Adidas in black or white.

Adidas Samba Sleek (Women's, SKU: 665640)

Adidas Samba Sleek Women'sA spiffed up women's version of the Samba Classic. There a bit more pricer, but boy do they look snazzy. The sole is a bit more narrow than the Classic, but it's made of the same rubber and has the same mold.

You may be able to find them at your local soccer apparel store (may be a special order) or you can order them online directly from Adidas in black only.

Adidas Stockholm (SKU: 098888)

Adidas Stockholm

These are sure to get people's attention. With an all suede upper and the same sole mold as the Samba Classic these would make for good unicycle shoes. I've heard these shoes are used within the volleyball community as well.

You may be able to find them at your local soccer apparel store (may be a special order) or you can order them online directly from Adidas in blue/yellow only.

No matter what your unicycle shoe choice is, it is important that you bring a pair of non-marking shoes that are used almost exclusively for indoor use to ALL gym practices going forward. It will go a long way to ensuring that we have access to facilities for unicycle use in the future.
